Mendelevium Production

²⁵⁶Md is produced by bombarding an ²⁵³Es target with alpha particles as well as U-accelerated Ne particles with energy approximately 130 MeV: ²³⁸U (²²Ne, p3n) ²⁵⁶Md. The isotopes are then extracted and identified radiometrically: ²⁵⁶Md counting the neutrons of ²⁵⁶Fm spontaneous fission, its daughter product or by its self alpha-radiation with energy 7.202 MeV.
